Diamond Pellet Design for Controlled Optical Grinding

1
Metal Bond Diamond Pellets: Provide a rigid abrasive structure and are commonly used for finish grinding and applications where stronger abrasive retention and higher grinding durability are required.
2
Resin Bond Diamond Pellets: Provide a different abrasive response and are widely used for fine grinding and superfinishing of optical materials. Resin bond diamond pellets are particularly relevant where surface condition and reduced polishing allowance are important.
3
Vitrified Bond Diamond Pellets: Use a rigid, porous bond structure to retain diamond abrasive grains. Their grinding behavior can be selected for applications requiring controlled cutting action, dressing characteristics and surface generation.
4
Pellet Geometry : Diamond pellets can be supplied with different working-surface geometries, including: Flat Concave Convex Custom radius profiles

Diamond Pellets for Optical Glass and Precision Components

Diamond pellets are primarily used where a fixed-abrasive grinding process is required to generate or refine precision surfaces.

Optical Glass and Lenses

Used for finish grinding and superfinishing of optical lenses and other optical glass components. The pellet specification can be matched to the required grinding stage, workpiece geometry and surface requirements.

Prisms and Optical Components

Diamond pellets can be configured for precision grinding of prisms and other optical components where controlled material removal and accurate surface generation are required.

Quartz and Fused Silica

Fixed-abrasive diamond pellets are also used in grinding and lapping research and applications involving fused silica and other hard optical materials. Surface roughness and subsurface damage are important considerations when optimizing these processes.

Ceramics and Hard Materials

Depending on the bond, grit and tool configuration, diamond pellets can also be applied to hard and brittle materials such as ceramics and selected crystalline materials.

Typical Processing Applications

  • Optical lens finish grinding
  • Optical glass superfinishing
  • Precision lapping
